Jack White Makes Me Shake

Oh sweet mercy I love this man. Jack White has taken himself on and outdone himself in his newest video, covering the 1960 song, 'I'm Shakin'. Thank you Jack, you never do me wrong.
Jack White's newest single originally comes from the man behind the song 'Fever' (made famous by Peggy Lee), Little Willie John (written by Rudy Toombs). Check out Jack's brand new video and the original tune below.

It's Almost Halloween!

HOORAY! It's my favourite month of the year! October is also probably the busiest and this year is no exception. Between a packed month of awesome DJ events, I'm also going to be moving house... right into G33KPRON HQ! I can not wait... stay tuned for the awesome that will come from that. I hope to see you all at some point this month, November is going to see me take a much needed hiatus from DJ'ing... at least until the holidays!

But for now, want to know where to find me rocking and rolling this month? Read on!!

Thanksgiving weekend has me mighty thankful for Motown and I'll be making you dance alongside DJ's Brett Millius, Reverend Throwdown and Caff on Saturday, Oct. 6. The party kicks off at 10pm, is $5 til midnight and $10 after over at 751 Queen St. W. Long weekend or not, this party is always rammed. Don't come so fashionably late that you don't get in, I want to shimmy with you!!

Join the Teenagewerewolf and I for our monthly installments of Mess Around and Ready Steady Go! You can never be too sure just what you'll hear on these nights but if you've ever been out you know to expect a booming blend of punk rock, rockabilly, r&b, soul, garage rock, rock n' roll and everything in between. Mess Around happens Saturday Oct. 13 at the Cloak & Dagger Pub (394 College St.) and Ready Steady Go! is Thursday Oct. 19 at Bovine Sex Club (542 Queen St. W.).

The Dia De Los Muertos Festival of the Arts happens on Sunday, Oct. 21 and is an all day event showcasing talented artists and vendors giving you the chance to shop til you drop and participate in workshops. I'll be dj'ing while you explore during the day, and you can stick around for the evening cabaret that follows. I'll be there from 1pm-6pm! Find out about all of the goings on including who will be performing: http://diadelosmuertosfestival.eventbrite.com/

Misty Guest DJ's SHINDIG! on July 27/12

Howdy hi Shindiggers!

On July 27th, Shindig! is proud to announce a very special guest 45 selector, Dj Misty Rock n' Roll coming to The Piston, 937 Bloor Street West!

Dj Misty has been bringing her unique brand of Punk, Rock, Soul, R&B and Garage sounds to dance floors, table tops and bar stools in Toronto for over five (5) years and she's showing no signs of letting any one take her place as Toronto's premier Rock n' Roll dance party ruler!

Misty is a master of mixing hardcore underground with pop hits that send every crowd in to a dancing frenzy that never seems to let up! She can "school" you and make you throw your hands in the air with delight as she moves seamlessly from one 7" 45 to another.

She's been seen spinning at clubs like Lee's Palace/Dance Cave, Tattoo Rock Parlour, Phoenix Concert Theatre and Velvet Underground and her residency at the legendary Queenshead pub was deemed one of 2006's 'Best of" by Toronto Life magazine. Her sound was once described as "Music to break your boyfriend's nose to" and rightly so!

Currently, Misty is holding down residencies at The Bovine Sex Club (Ready Steady Go!) and The Cloak and Dagger Pub (Mess Around!) with her partner in crime, The Teenage Werewolf. She's also the resident music geek/columnist at G33KPRON, Toronto's premier geek culture website.

We are very excited to have her coming through to spin a set of 50's & 60's R&B, Soul, Garage and Rockabilly at the next Shindig! party on July 27th at The Piston, 937 Bloor Street West. The cover is only $5.00 and you must be 19 years or older to get in.

Get ready for another night of sweet R&B, Soul, Garage and Rockabilly with special guest Dj Misty Rock n' Roll alongside resident dance floor killers Splattermonkey and Parkdale Funk.

See you on the dance floor!

So you can tell I'm not posting here as much these days and that's not a bad thing because I am posting all kinds of music related goodness on the blog, G33KPRON which I've talked about on here before. It's a nerd culture blog written by awesome geeky women like myself and also features galleries of some very sexy geeks. So if you are reading this, go check it out and feel free to add your feedback in the comments section there. You can also email me any tips, or if you're in a band you can always send your info to, misty@g33kpron.com

We're The Droids you were looking for.

Otherwise, my life has been rather peachy. I'm finishing up my last round of overnight shifts for a long time which is a relief (and comes just in time for summer!). I'm still dj'ing monthly nights at the Bovine & Cloak & Dagger and will be dj'ing the occasional upcoming gig of awesome in the near future too; so keep an eye (and ear!) open for me at some of the upcoming Motown parties among others. I have a much needed vacation coming up to visit sunny California, I'll be spending a week in L.A. and San Diego. Have you been? Tell me where to go! I'll take lots of pics and post them here when I get back though in the meanwhile you'll have to keep up with my goings on by reading G33KPRON. See you all soon. :)

xx

One Of My All Time Favourite Girl-Group Songs

Hands down, Egyptian Shumba sung by The Tammys is the best girl group song. Period. Sure, it can't directly compete with classics like, Be My Baby and Da Doo Run Run but there's something about this song that I just can't shake. It could be the catchy "shimmy shimmy shy yai missing this" line or maybe it's the wild shrieks and screams by the girls themselves. Yep, it's definitely the shrieks and screams. Listen!

Needless to say, I desperately want this on 45 but I can't find it ANYWHERE! AAAAGGGHHH!!

If you love girl groups (and guy groups from the 60's) make sure you come out to The Piston (937 Bloor St. W.) on February 24th so you won't miss a very special party. SHINDIG! Girl Groups vs. Guy Groups will make you dance as we match up The Supremes vs. The Temptations, The Shangri-Las vs. The Beatles and The Bobettes vs. The Belmonts to name a few. Fighting it out in the girl's corner will be DJ Nico and myself while DJ's Parkdale Funk and General Eclectic hold it down for the guys. Our host and referee will be none other than DJ Splattermonkey so don't miss this night for a battle where the dance floor is the true winner. Get more info on the Facebook event page, RIGHT HERE.

MIXTAPE MONDAY: Vinyl From The CIUT Crypt

This week you get a double shot on Mixtape Monday! Since I got to hang out on CIUT 89.5FM's show, 'Vinyl From The CIUT Crypt' with host DJ Nico and the Shindig! DJ's this past Saturday, I thought I would let you all listen in case you  missed the show when it was live. Tune in for two hours of awesome blues, soul, girl groups & garage on the radio with DJ's Parkdale Funk, General Eclectic, Splattermonkey and myself. DJ Nico was on the controls and very nice to let us come in and take over the show with some of our favourite selections on 45.

Happy Mid February Something or Another

Hello friends, long time no see! I've been a busy girl and DJ and wouldn't have life any other way even if that means neglecting a certain blog. The upside though, is if you do find yourself missing me and the things I have to say you CAN read my much more frequent posts over on the blog, G33KPRON. That website has been BLOWING up and I can barely leave my house these days without overhearing some buzz about the site. It's a good thing too, because we're throwing the official Comicon Toronto Kick Off Party at Tattoo Rock Parlour next month and we have some crazy fun up our superhero sleeves for that one including TWO celebrity guests; Kristanna Loken from Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines and (I can hardly wait) TIA CARRERE from WAYNE'S WORLD. I don't want to lose my shit or anything but she rules. And is a babe. My first thought when I heard she'd be at the party was that I have to DJ Ballroom Blitz AND Dream Weaver just for her. Would that be too cheesy? Maybe, but c'mon. If Tia Carrere was a president, she'd be BABERAHAM LINCOLN.

What else is new in my DJ life? I'll be co-hosting 'Vinyl From The Ciut Crypt', broadcast on 89.5FM or www.ciut.fm with DJ Nico, Splattermonkey, Parkdale Funk & General Eclectic later on today, between 6pm and 8pm. Tune in to hear us playing our favourite vinyl selections with an emphasis on girl groups vs guy groups while we get ready to go head to head in a girls vs. guys battle next Friday at The Piston. All vinyl, all girl groups and guy groups and it's gonna get messy. I can't wait to wipe the floor with the guys, and show em just how DJ Nico and I do things when you put some 45's in our hands. ;)

So...phew! And this isn't even beginning to mention all that's happening in my big kid job life (all good things!) or anything else for that matter. Yikes. I guess I will have to save all of that for another blog, another day but in the meanwhile, I hope to see you at one of my upcoming DJ nights or at The Spits show (@Silver Dollar Room) on Feb. 25, they are all nights I've taken off from overnight shifts in the shelter so they will be nights that are much needed for fun. Can't wait to see you!

RIP Jay Reatard: Better Than Something

*originally posted for www.g33kpron.com

It was exactly two years ago today that musician, Jimmy Lee Lindsay Jr. aka Jay Reatard was found dead in his home. Love him or hate him, he left behind a legacy of great music that makes you wonder what he would have gone on to do if he lived beyond his 29 years.

I've only gotten a chance to see Jay Reatard once, and it was a very short show. That was because two or three songs into his set, he punched an audience member and stormed off stage. To be fair, the dude had been harassing the band and when he went so far as to unplug Jay's guitar, that was it. Socked right in the head. I would have done the same thing.

I wish I could have had a chance to see Jay Reatard again especially since his last album, 'Watch Me Fall' was released a few months before he died. Some of the album's song titles read like premonitions to the musician's fate, such as; "It Ain't Gonna Save Me," "Can't Do It Anymore" and "There Is No Sun."

Check out this trailer for the feature documentary about the controversial and prolific garage rocker from Memphis, Tennessee entitled, 'Better Than Something' and visit the website here.
